Concert series Tuesday Jazz Club

Tuesday Jazz Club

We are opening the fourth edition of Tuesday Jazz Club. As in the previous years, the 2017-2018 season boasts a rich programme, featuring a lineup of outstanding artists with various kinds of jazz styles.

Modern acoustic jazz, the dominating trend, will be played by such artists as Zbigniew Namysłowski, Kazimierz Jonkisz, Piotr Wojtasik, Leszek Kułakowski, Grzegorz Nagórski,  trumpeter Gary Guthman, jazz percussion giant Jeff “Tain” Watts, guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, and versatile pianist Alfredo Rodriguez; Cracow Jazz Collective, a young and vibrant group, will contribute their touch of avangarde.

We will also hear some lighter forms of jazz. The concert of the Łukasz Pawlik group, with Michael “Patches” Stewart as a special guest, promises to be a very interesting event in the spirit of subtle fusion. A harder version of jazz-rock will be played by Jazz Funk Experience, an international group composed of Polish musicians and Derrick McKenzie and Matt Johnson, members of the supergroup Jamiroquai. Energetic fusion is also the domain of Marek Napiórkowski. This excellent Polish guitarist will perform with his American friends: Clarence Penn and Manuel Valera.

Osjan, a cult band of the 1970s and the first Polish group to develop what later became known as world music, will bring in some ethnic flavour. Sefardix Trio will present a project comprising their own adaptations of Sefardic songs, set in the context of contemporary improvised music.

Jazz songs will be performed by Mark Preston from the US and Janusz Szrom, who will present the greatest hits of the Przybora-Wasowski team. Jazz fans cannot miss Grażyna Łobaszewska, who with the group Ajagore will present songs from her latest album, rooted in the spirit of strong rock with a touch of blues and reggae.

We also recommend concerts by our violinists: Adam  Bałdych, probably the most recognisable Polish jazzman in Europe, Mateusz Smoczyński, outstanding musician and composer, and Tomasz Chyła, who represents the youngest generation and whose Quintet won the prestigious Kraków Jazz Juniors competition in 2016.

A closer look at the programme reveals that a large number of events correspond closely to the now prevailing “tribute-to” direction, marked by a turn towards tradition and an attempt to look at legendary artists and their heritage through a modern lens. We find here projects based on music by Polish composers (Henryk Majewski, Andrzej Przybielski, and Krzysztof Komeda), and by international giants of jazz: Joe Zawinul, Shirley Horn, Kenny Wheeler, and the Gil Evans-Miles Davis team. They all contributed greatly to the emergence of new trends in jazz and left behind a wealth of music, both recordings and scores. Drawing from this bounty seems to be very natural and desirable, especially in times when jazz is striving to rediscover its identity.

We invite all jazz lovers to join us for these and other Tuesday Jazz Club concerts and enjoy the musical experience together.
