Between December 2nd and December 14th 2018 Katowice shall be the host of the 24th meeting of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24). This biggest event in the region will bring together 30,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries, that is why preparations already started a few months ago. They are now entering a phase in which urban space will be prepared for this major event.
The takeover of MCK - the International Congress Center and the Spodek Hall by the Jurisdiction of the United Nations is planned for the second half of November. On September, 28th works began on the premises of the car parks located in the Culture Zone (i.e. next to the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Silesian Museum). 550 parking spaces were excluded from public use.
„We appeal to people commuting (…) to Katowice and other cities to use public transport – tram, bus or bicycle during the time when the car parks remain closed, as the number of parking spaces in the centre shall not increase and it will be difficult to find a parking lot which is going to generate further traffic problems. We are aware of the fact that some drivers will not resign from driving their cars. That is why municipal guards will patrol the Star Housing Estate and the Kossutha district and check whether the vehicles are not parked in prohibited places – which is always inconvenient for the residents and contributes to the devastation of green belts” – Ewa Lipka, the spokesman of the Municipal Office.
